Spiritual Journey Of A Doctor, A Thought On The Occasion Of This Doctors Day.

Being a surgeon and practicing surgery for more than two decades, most of my working hours were full of emotions filled with smiles, sufferings, hope, helplessness, happiness, and tears. We doctors see happiness and smiles with a lot of hope with the birth of a child at one moment and rushing a newborn to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) next moment. We faced almost all kind of different difficult challenges of life and death entwined with many social, economic and political problems. Most of the time we consider it as a part of our daily professional life, but many times it shakes our scientific, religious and cultural knowledge and beliefs. This unique nature of our work with its urgency and emergency to save the precious human life create a complexness in our natural human thought processes.

Health in itself is a complicated issue. In this broader context of health, doctors are supposed to treat the patients and provide advice for prevention, promotion, and maintenance of health and wellbeing fo society. Majority of these activities are based on the events like infrastructure, safe water, hygiene, clean environment, etc. which are responsible for the majority of ill health, are beyond the control of us as doctors. We can understand this with a simple example, due to lousy infrastructure or inability of government and political system, our water is getting polluted, polluted water leads to many waterborne diseases leading to illness, we all know this, but with every outbreak the burnt of anger and emotional outrage comes to the doctors and hospitals.

Human sufferings have multiple dimensions like physical, psychological, social, cultural, religious and scientific. Doctors generally entered in our life in some health-related issue, means we meet a doctor when we are suffering. Any state of suffering demands empathy, but for a doctor, it becomes a routine, many times it is overwhelming, since all the people coming to visit us, have certain sufferings, and every one of them is seeing his or her own pain as the biggest one. All clinicians, physicians, and surgeons face such situations on a daily basis, you can visit the emergency of a hospital near you, and just sit there for a while. Overburdened, exhausted, overworked are few words we can describe the working situation of doctors in our country. Understaffed healthcare facilities with lack of modern support system with increased population lead to overcrowding and mob situations in hospitals, leaving doctors helpless and least heard in crisis situations. Results are in front of us, in the forms of violence against doctors and healthcare workers.

Being a surgeon, I have been at the forefront of many emergency and crisis situations in different hospitals, both in private and government. It is easier to preach to doctors to be humane and practice patience, but it is not easy to do so many times. It created a sense of helplessness, irritation, and anxiety among doctors. Appart from affecting their health it also affects their behavior. I have noticed most of the hardworking clinicians are working under tremendous stress. It is very easy to make culprit and villain out of a diligent and efficient doctor immediately, without listening to him and going in depth of the incidences. It is demotivating to doctors, and it is very harmful to the healthcare system of our country. I have noticed a creeping tendency among clinicians to become more defensive and careful in dealing with emergency situations. It is good to fix the responsibility, but at the same time, it is more necessary to provide a conducive and fearless environment in treating patients in our hospitals.

The concept of God is created by human beings. Our fear and anxieties created this concept of God. So, we can say that the God is a creation of human intelligence and the human mind. Likewise, we doctors being considered second to God, or God on earth need to be opposed and removed. We are living in the era of science, and we are practicing scientific medicine where there should not be any role for such phrases. We doctors should not be happy with such adjectives as well. We are human beings with specialized knowledge of medicine to treat people and prevent and promote their health. We need to be good human being, caring and helping societies and communities to achieve good health, rather than being decorated as God. Communicating our limitations to people in a very scientific way is necessary. We need to refrain ourselves with extreme jingoism about our treatment processes and miraculous treatment achievements. Restraining ourselves from making comments about fellow doctors without knowing the situations and circumstances is very important.

Medicine is one of the oldest professions in the history of human civilization. It is rightly called as a 'Nobel Profession.' Over the period of time, it has taken a form of business. In this business, we doctors are being used by corporates and governments both. An ordinary doctor is quickly becoming the target of this system. It is very easy and convenient to put all the blame on the doctors for all the problems created by politicians, beurocrates, and management, they do it very quickly and efficiently to hide their responsibilities. Naturally, our basic human tendencies of greed and getting success quickly, which are prevalent in society, also need to be addressed, especially among the young generation of doctors. It is the responsibility of senior colleagues in the profession to create communication channels within the doctor community and with the society to put the situation in proper scientific perspective.

Therefore, spiritual health is the need of the hour to understand in its proper perspective by doctors first, since then only it will be possible to propagate the idea of spiritual health in communities and society. Spiritual health can be defined in simple terms as "Health of our human thought processes, to keep it on the positive side, that means to keep our thought processes in line with humanity and human values." We generally take our religiosity and religious beliefs as our spirituality, it is erroneous. Spirituality is a highly evolved human thought process, which shapes, controls, heals and correct our all other thought processes in the domain of religion, culture, society, philosophy, and science. Our religiosity and religious thought process are created on the base of spirituality, but the majority of it is constituted by our beliefs, practices, and rituals. The evolved function of spirituality is to maintain and promote our positive thoughts and correct and heal the negative thoughts in our religion, culture, and philosophy. So, if we follow our real spiritual thought process and spirituality, it will help us in all domains of our health and professinal duties.

With this Happy Doctors Day to all of you.

Mahesh Bhatt.

Spiritual Thought Process

Our brain is the amazing organ in our body, this about three pounds has the amazing capacity to learn, to store and to create different kinds of thought processes, made up of trillions of neurons and their synapses (connections between different neurons). Our brain and it's all thought processes are the results of millions of years natural evolutionary developmental process, which put the human beings on the top of the animal kingdom. All of our thought processes are the result of complex biochemical reactions in our brain, all of them are controlled by our DNA. This miracle molecule is a double helix structure and makes our genes. Our DNA also passed through the same natural evolutionary developmental process of millions of years to what we have today in our genes. All of our thought processes are controlled by our highly developed coding of human DNA. The spiritual thought process is the highly developed thought process of our brain. It has to control and regulating chara

Concepts Of Positive Energy In Our Thought Processes

#SpiritualHealth Energy is the universe and universe is energy. We can understand it with this simple scientific logic that each and every object living or non-living is made of atoms, and atoms are made up of many subatomic particles, if we peek inside those atoms we will find different strata of energy spinning around a nucleus, we call it atomic energy. It is not possible for the universe to exist without energy. Similarly, life is energy. Plants store energy from the sun and pass it to food chain which runs the life in the animal kingdom. From the strict laws of physics, energy cannot be divided into the categories of positive energy and negative energy, but we have positive and negative impact of energy on our health, social and cultural life. So, that energy which have good results for our health and life, we call it positive energy and if it is adverse then we call it as negative energy. We can understand it with a simple example, suppose somebody run for a distance to d

From The Upcoming Book "Spiritual Health" (Coming Very Soon)

Our brain is a fantastic organ in our body.   Through the process of development, it has developed in the present form. It took millions and millions of years in this process of evolution and development to make us human beings where it put us apart from other animals, and make us unique in the whole animal kingdom, where we have acquired the enormous power to influence and alter the nature. In this process, the unique thought process of our brain is the driving force behind our actions and behavior at the individual level, at the community level, at our country level, at the global level and finally at the universal level. Our thought processes make the basic building blocks of our comprehensive thought process which we call humanity and human values. At some point in time, we start asking a question to ourselves about our existence, about our ‘ self,' about the purpose of our life, about our universe and its beginning and end, about death, what happens after

Diwali In Our Spiritual Thought Process

Today is 'diwali'. Diwali is for the word 'Deepawali' meaning line of lamps 'दीप '. We have many mythological stories behind the reasons to celebrate it, we all know them, one very interesting one is that it was celebrated by the people in ancient Ayodhya, the capital of Lord Rama, when he returned back after exile of fourteen years, after defeating Ravana, the demon king. Apart from this there are some other stories as well, but the above mentioned story is the most famous among the people. Here we are going to discuss regarding the human thought process behind the festivities and festivals. The most interesting and amazing organ in our body is our brain and its thought processes make it very interesting and versatile, since it is our different thought processes which control our conscious mind and intelligence. All our thought processes are the result of very complex reactions of biochemicals and neurotransmitters in our brain. Human brain and human thou

Merry Christmas And Happy New Year From Spiritual Health

Our religious occasions like Deepawali, Ied, Christmas, Guru Parva and all such events in all religions are the reflection of the underlying spiritual thought process in our religious thought processes. These festive occasions are based on the fundamental teachings of humanity and human values in the base of our religion and belief system. Festivals (both religious and cultural) create a lot of positive thinking and positive energy among a large population. Every religion or belief will have some spiritual component. When this spiritual element is amalgamated with specific rituals, ideas, and practices, it becomes a religion. Religion is the byproduct of the social, psychological and cultural developmental process of human beings. Throughout the history of human development, we created some ways to live and make our life happy by recognizing our spiritual needs; we call them religion.  Every religion has a spiritual base; it is not possible to conceptualize a religion without spiri

Evolutionary Journey of Spiritual Thought Process and Spirituality

Development of human brain started with the appearance of the neural plate (a group of cells) at around 7nth week of embryonic life. We can call it as our primitive brain, then it forms a neural tube and finally into our brain, brainstem and spinal cord in the third trimester of our embryonic life we have a well-formed brain and spinal cord. Studies have shown that our human learning process started in the womb of mother before birth. Interestingly our brain follows the same evolutionary mechanism from the primitive brain to the most complex human brain, as we have in our evolutionary history. The only difference is that it took only nine months in the womb to complete a process which took millions and millions of years on the natural evolutionary timeline. It happens because of the codings in our DNA in our genes, again which took millions of years to develop into human DNA. Every thought process in our brain is because of complex biochemical reactions and movement of ions in ce

Happiness, Bliss and Spiritual Health (Chapter 24, #SpiritualHealth)

Happiness and bliss is an emotion related to our wellbeing. It can range from a sense of contentment to real joy. Happiness is considered the most mental perception of our wellbeing . So, we can say that happiness is a happy mental state. United Nations declared the 20 th March as the ‘International Day of Happiness,' to recognize the social importance of the joy in every sphere of life. Bliss is defined as a state of magnified happiness. It occurs with some personal achievements, contentment, and fulfillment. Bliss is described differently in different faiths and religions as happiness. Biologically bliss and happiness are the products of the same thought processes in our brain. Religious concepts define pleasure according to their fundamental beliefs and objectives. The idea of eternal bliss in religions is purely a religious thought process. Eternal bliss is considered the supreme level of happiness, where we can have joy without boundaries. Different reli

Spirituality, Religions, ans Science in Context of Human Health - Spiritual Health

WHO defined health as “A state of Complete physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity.” t his reflects a positive thought about our health. Though this idea is not new, in Ayurveda, our ancient knowledge of human health the ‘balance’ between various physical, mental and social functioning of the human body is considered as a core value of health and wellness. Modern medicine is criticized for its mechanistic approach towards human health and wellness. Even the definition as mentioned above is considered incomplete and misinforming about human health by many people. Addition of the fourth dimension, the spiritual dimension gives it completeness in some respects. With all these criticisms the WHO definition is widely accepted and applied definition of human health across the globe by healthcare professionals and researchers. The fourth dimension, the Spiritual Dimension is widely discussed among people, physicians, c
