Spirituality, Religions, ans Science in Context of Human Health - Spiritual Health

WHO defined health as “A state of Complete physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity.” this reflects a positive thought about our health. Though this idea is not new, in Ayurveda, our ancient knowledge of human health the ‘balance’ between various physical, mental and social functioning of the human body is considered as a core value of health and wellness. Modern medicine is criticized for its mechanistic approach towards human health and wellness. Even the definition as mentioned above is considered incomplete and misinforming about human health by many people. Addition of the fourth dimension, the spiritual dimension gives it completeness in some respects. With all these criticisms the WHO definition is widely accepted and applied definition of human health across the globe by healthcare professionals and researchers.
The fourth dimension, the Spiritual Dimension is widely discussed among people, physicians, communities, and organizations indulged in the healthcare industry. To understand it we need to understand the term ‘Spirituality’ first. It is a difficult task to define spirituality since it has multiple definitions with many complexities and ambiguities created around this. We generally connect our spirituality with our religion, faith or belief system. Which is not wrong, but it is partially correct. To understand this, we need to know that both religion and spirituality are the products of a highly evolved human thought process.
The human brain has complex biochemical mechanisms, and our various thought processes are the result of those reactions which produce thoughts. It is our thoughts which make us human. Spirituality is the product of spiritual thought process and religion is the product of religious thought process, and both have many similarities. It is true that every one of us wants to realize our spirituality and for that purpose, we follow religions, gurus, rituals, and belief systems, this is a fundamental difference between religiosity and spirituality, the latter being the aim of the former being the path. Therefore, religion and spirituality are not synonymous.
All religions always claim to provide spiritual realization to their followers by obeying their gods, practices, and rituals. Religions with all their positive and negative religious thoughts played a significant role in the creation of humanity with human values at its core. Every religion assures its followers to help in attaining spiritual dimension; in that way, this assurance helped them in attracting and maintaining their follower base. So, we can say ‘spirituality’ is necessary for the existence of religions. After the scientific and industrial revolution, the scientific thought process is playing a significant role in the formulation of collective human thought process. We can see a substantial change in our understanding of spirituality, humanity, science, religions, and their interactions. Current scientific theories of evolution and quantum physics created more modern versions of world view regarding spirituality and religious philosophies.
With this background when we explore spirituality, we can see it at the core of humanity and human values. It appeared as a highly evolved human thought that has all the positive ideas which make the common base for every religion and belief system to exist and finally makes interfaith and inter-religion dialogue possible. It helps in enhancing positive thoughts and controlling and modulating negative thoughts on the premises of belief and social systems. So, to make it simple, less complicated, and less ambiguous, spirituality can be defined as “All positive thoughts of humanity and human values which have the enhancing properties for positive thoughts and correcting and healing properties for the negative thoughts in the complex ecosystem of human thought processes.”
Positive thoughts affect physical, mental, and social dimensions of our health. It happens because of the evolutionary process of millions of years, which created our biochemistry to release the biochemicals which produce all positive impact on our mental and physical health by reducing stress, increasing happiness, regulating blood pressure, and elevating our mood. Our social and interpersonal relations automatically get a boost with positive thoughts, and it finally improves our social and professional life. While negative thoughts have just opposite effect on our biochemistry and physiology by a sad mood, increasing heart rate and blood pressure, irritable, stressed, and anxious. In all, we feel a sense of well-being and happiness with positive thoughts.
Spiritual thoughts by their inherent properties of creating positive thoughts and healing and correcting negative thoughts helped in keeping the thought ecosystem in our mind on the positive side. This is the reason that the spiritual dimension is vital for our health and well-being in all aspects of our daily life.
From a public health point of view, it is crucial to understand this simple understanding of spirituality and better positive spiritual health. We can see the complexities and ambiguities created around this concept and most of the time they are intentional for various vested interests since all of us want to realize our spirituality, so it is easy to be the easy target of specific vested interests. We can see such scams surfacing time to time in media. People need to understand that all positive thoughts in their belief systems, all positive ideas of humanity and human values like love, respect, tolerance, helpfulness, kindness, etc. are Spiritual Thoughts and to encourage them at the individual level, in society, and in collective humanity is spirituality. Spiritual Health merely is enhancing the positive thoughts, correcting and healing of negative thoughts and getting all benefits of our positive thoughts on all the dimensions of our health. As a human being, it is very natural to have negative thoughts, but this simple definition of Spirituality can help us to heal our negative thoughts by enhancing positive thoughts. This will also help people to prevent themselves from the trap of vested interests which is not suitable for overall public health.
Nature has created human beings by embedding the codes in their DNA through the journey of their evolutionary process that their physiology and biochemistry will respond with all good results on their health, happiness, and wellbeing. Simultaneously all the negative thoughts of religion, culture, science, and philosophies will have all adverse effects. The higher notions of spirituality helped in controlling the conflicts between individuals, groups, societies, religions, and nations to prosper the humanity and human values by enhancing the positive thoughts of peace, tolerance, happiness, helpfulness, kindness, and wellbeing.

Spiritual Thought Process

Our brain is the amazing organ in our body, this about three pounds has the amazing capacity to learn, to store and to create different kinds of thought processes, made up of trillions of neurons and their synapses (connections between different neurons). Our brain and it's all thought processes are the results of millions of years natural evolutionary developmental process, which put the human beings on the top of the animal kingdom. All of our thought processes are the result of complex biochemical reactions in our brain, all of them are controlled by our DNA. This miracle molecule is a double helix structure and makes our genes. Our DNA also passed through the same natural evolutionary developmental process of millions of years to what we have today in our genes. All of our thought processes are controlled by our highly developed coding of human DNA. The spiritual thought process is the highly developed thought process of our brain. It has to control and regulating chara

Concepts Of Positive Energy In Our Thought Processes

#SpiritualHealth Energy is the universe and universe is energy. We can understand it with this simple scientific logic that each and every object living or non-living is made of atoms, and atoms are made up of many subatomic particles, if we peek inside those atoms we will find different strata of energy spinning around a nucleus, we call it atomic energy. It is not possible for the universe to exist without energy. Similarly, life is energy. Plants store energy from the sun and pass it to food chain which runs the life in the animal kingdom. From the strict laws of physics, energy cannot be divided into the categories of positive energy and negative energy, but we have positive and negative impact of energy on our health, social and cultural life. So, that energy which have good results for our health and life, we call it positive energy and if it is adverse then we call it as negative energy. We can understand it with a simple example, suppose somebody run for a distance to d

From The Upcoming Book "Spiritual Health" (Coming Very Soon)

Our brain is a fantastic organ in our body.   Through the process of development, it has developed in the present form. It took millions and millions of years in this process of evolution and development to make us human beings where it put us apart from other animals, and make us unique in the whole animal kingdom, where we have acquired the enormous power to influence and alter the nature. In this process, the unique thought process of our brain is the driving force behind our actions and behavior at the individual level, at the community level, at our country level, at the global level and finally at the universal level. Our thought processes make the basic building blocks of our comprehensive thought process which we call humanity and human values. At some point in time, we start asking a question to ourselves about our existence, about our ‘ self,' about the purpose of our life, about our universe and its beginning and end, about death, what happens after

Diwali In Our Spiritual Thought Process

Today is 'diwali'. Diwali is for the word 'Deepawali' meaning line of lamps 'दीप '. We have many mythological stories behind the reasons to celebrate it, we all know them, one very interesting one is that it was celebrated by the people in ancient Ayodhya, the capital of Lord Rama, when he returned back after exile of fourteen years, after defeating Ravana, the demon king. Apart from this there are some other stories as well, but the above mentioned story is the most famous among the people. Here we are going to discuss regarding the human thought process behind the festivities and festivals. The most interesting and amazing organ in our body is our brain and its thought processes make it very interesting and versatile, since it is our different thought processes which control our conscious mind and intelligence. All our thought processes are the result of very complex reactions of biochemicals and neurotransmitters in our brain. Human brain and human thou

Merry Christmas And Happy New Year From Spiritual Health

Our religious occasions like Deepawali, Ied, Christmas, Guru Parva and all such events in all religions are the reflection of the underlying spiritual thought process in our religious thought processes. These festive occasions are based on the fundamental teachings of humanity and human values in the base of our religion and belief system. Festivals (both religious and cultural) create a lot of positive thinking and positive energy among a large population. Every religion or belief will have some spiritual component. When this spiritual element is amalgamated with specific rituals, ideas, and practices, it becomes a religion. Religion is the byproduct of the social, psychological and cultural developmental process of human beings. Throughout the history of human development, we created some ways to live and make our life happy by recognizing our spiritual needs; we call them religion.  Every religion has a spiritual base; it is not possible to conceptualize a religion without spiri

Evolutionary Journey of Spiritual Thought Process and Spirituality

Development of human brain started with the appearance of the neural plate (a group of cells) at around 7nth week of embryonic life. We can call it as our primitive brain, then it forms a neural tube and finally into our brain, brainstem and spinal cord in the third trimester of our embryonic life we have a well-formed brain and spinal cord. Studies have shown that our human learning process started in the womb of mother before birth. Interestingly our brain follows the same evolutionary mechanism from the primitive brain to the most complex human brain, as we have in our evolutionary history. The only difference is that it took only nine months in the womb to complete a process which took millions and millions of years on the natural evolutionary timeline. It happens because of the codings in our DNA in our genes, again which took millions of years to develop into human DNA. Every thought process in our brain is because of complex biochemical reactions and movement of ions in ce

Spiritual Journey Of A Doctor, A Thought On The Occasion Of This Doctors Day.

Being a surgeon and practicing surgery for more than two decades, most of my working hours were full of emotions filled with smiles, sufferings, hope, helplessness, happiness, and tears. We doctors see happiness and smiles with a lot of hope with the birth of a child at one moment and rushing a newborn to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) next moment. We faced almost all kind of different difficult challenges of life and death entwined with many social, economic and political problems. Most of the time we consider it as a part of our daily professional life, but many times it shakes our scientific, religious and cultural knowledge and beliefs. This unique nature of our work with its urgency and emergency to save the precious human life create a complexness in our natural human thought processes. Health in itself is a complicated issue. In this broader context of health, doctors are supposed to treat the patients and provide advice for prevention, promotion, and maintenance of

Happiness, Bliss and Spiritual Health (Chapter 24, #SpiritualHealth)

Happiness and bliss is an emotion related to our wellbeing. It can range from a sense of contentment to real joy. Happiness is considered the most mental perception of our wellbeing . So, we can say that happiness is a happy mental state. United Nations declared the 20 th March as the ‘International Day of Happiness,' to recognize the social importance of the joy in every sphere of life. Bliss is defined as a state of magnified happiness. It occurs with some personal achievements, contentment, and fulfillment. Bliss is described differently in different faiths and religions as happiness. Biologically bliss and happiness are the products of the same thought processes in our brain. Religious concepts define pleasure according to their fundamental beliefs and objectives. The idea of eternal bliss in religions is purely a religious thought process. Eternal bliss is considered the supreme level of happiness, where we can have joy without boundaries. Different reli
