Spirituality and religiosity are two different words with different meanings, but they have many ambiguities in their definition and
expression. When we talk about spirituality, we start talking about our
religious and cultural beliefs, faith and their practices. We take our
religiosity as our spirituality. In fact, they are expressions of our
two different thought processes. Religiosity is the expression of our
religious thought process and spirituality is the expression of our
spiritual thought process. Every religion has a base of spirituality,
but the major component of the religion is created by the beliefs,
practices, and rituals which give the identity to the religion. In that
way, religion is a group of individuals who have common beliefs,
practices, and rituals to attain their spirituality. Interestingly
spiritual component will be the same in all religions, but in the
vicinity of religions, our other thought processes of religion and
identity prevent the development of spirituality. Results are in front
of us we are becoming more religious but less spiritual.
The spiritual thought process is the pinnacle of the millions of years of the natural evolutionary and developmental process of our brain, and it's thought processes which are encoded in our DNA and put us on the apex of the animal kingdom. We can see the similarity of this thought process across the cultures, religions, and philosophies across the globe, in the form of humanity and human values. All the religions of the world have these values as their base. Any concept of religion is not practically possible without the component of spirituality. So, the spiritual thought process is an important and necessary component of every religious thought process. Therefore, every religion requires spirituality for its existence. Spirituality and spiritual thought process act as a cohesive force in the formation of religion, and it increases the possibility of dialogue and understanding between different religions, but since religious thought process or religiosity has its practices, beliefs, and rituals as the major component, they suppress the spirituality and do not allow its full development.
On the evolutionary timeline the complex and more developed functions and organs appear late, it is the simple principle of evolution that it follows a path from primitive to complex. Similarly, we can see this in case of our thought process as well; spiritual thought process appears late in the human lifecycle. It proves that spiritual thought process is the most advanced thought process in all the human thought processes. Characteristically it is evolved to explore, control and to correct all other thought processes. Religion works on a thought process of making groups (herds), it has the primary thought process of safety in a group, which is a primitive thought process which we are carrying forward from our animal ancestors. It has many negative thought processes which got reflected in the form of hatred, fundamentalism, intolerance, extremism, and violence. The spiritual thought process has a controlling effect on all the negative thought processes within the religions, but many times the religious thought processes get prominence. So, on evolutionary ground spiritual thought process is superior to the religious thought process. Therefore, spiritual thought process works as a controlling process in all other thought processes like scientific, cultural, religious, social, political and philosophic thought processes.
We can say that the spiritual thoughts are all the thoughts of humanity and human values, so, spirituality and spiritual thought process helps in changing all the negative thought processes to positive thoughts of pro-humanity and pro-human values across the ecosystem of our human thought processes in our mind. It is necessary to clear the ambiguities in our understanding of our religious thought process and spiritual thought process; this will help us in searching our spirituality in our faith and religion. We will not take our religiosity as our spirituality. It is the need of the hour to search our spirituality in our religiosity. It will make us more spiritual in all the situations if we believe ina religion or we do not believe in religion. Understanding our spirituality will improve the quality of our all other thought processes like cultural, social, political, scientific, philosophic, etc. It is to strengthen our spiritual health.
