Religiosity can potentially change our thoughts to extremist thoughts. In such a situation someone can kill themselves or can kill others. We are witnessing both the circumstances around us globally. When eleven people of one family in Delhi kill themselves on the name of some belief or religious ritual, indeed, it is the transformation of religious thought process into an extreme thought process. It turned into a psychological disorder, which appeared in its cruel forms without any apparent signs and symptoms since religious rituals are considered normal in society, and when we noticed it, it has spoiled many lives. It is evident in all such incidences in the recent past.
In our society, we erroneously take religion and spirituality as the same or synonymous. In fact, we follow a religion, belief, cult or guru for spiritual peace and it is their prime duty to nurture and develop our spirituality, but unfortunately, it is not always so. It is our religiosity and its emotional dimensions which are nurtured at these places instead of spirituality, and people and followers are pushed into the conflicting thoughts of religiosity, which may turn into extreme behavior. Finally, the results are in front of us. It is not happening only in one country, but it is happening all over the world. We can see many cunning conspiracies of greed, politics, and hatred behind it at the individual, social, national and global levels. We all know it well.
First of all, it is necessary to understand that religion and spirituality are two different thoughts of the human brain, governed by two different thought processes. Religious thoughts are evolved and developed form of thoughts of herd formation among other animals of the animal kingdom, which is necessary for survival and security. Spiritual thoughts and spirituality are specific to the human brain only, which has evolved and developed in the human brain only in the whole animal kingdom which created the ideas of humanity and human values. All religions and beliefs developed around these concepts of spirituality which is humanity and human values, but the major component of them is created by different practices, rituals, gods and methods of worship, which give them an identity. In the process, we consider or taught to believe these practices and rituals as our spirituality with various hidden aims and objectives. These games may have individual, family, social to international and global dimensions.
Spirituality (not religiosity) is the most evolved and developed thought processes among all the thought processes of the human brain, which is the result of the natural evolution of millions of years. In the form of humanity and human values, it helps in creating and establishing communication within the society and humanity in all areas of religious, cultural, philosophic, and scientific beliefs and solving the complex issues of humanity across the world. We can say that our spiritual thought process protects us from the toxic effects of negative thoughts and emotions of our brain, it takes us towards the scientific thinking based on reasoning, but it is discouraged intentionally in belief systems. We all human beings are in continuous search for spirituality due to our different reasons by our various means. We go to religions, follow, gurus, do worship or listen to them, and take our religiosity as our spirituality, by doing this either somebody else started playing with our emotions or we started playing with their emotions.
Human thoughts are very powerful, which are created by different complex biochemical reactions in our brain. Our thoughts created our thinking and crafted our nature, behavior, and personality. While positive thought processes enhance the wellness and our health, negative thought processes affect all three dimensions of our health and make us sick. That is why “Spiritual Health” is considered the fourth dimension of our health. Therefore, we need to look for spirituality in our belief systems, which is there in the form of humanity and human values. Extreme religiosity always hampers and obstruct the development of our spirituality, it makes us ultra-orthodox, which makes us intolerant and extremist in our behavior, which is not suitable for our health, humanity and human values.
